Claudia W. Ruitenberg is a Professor in the Department of Educational Studies at the University of British Columbia's Faculty of Education. Her work focuses on philosophy of education, citizenship education, sustainability, and environmental ethics. She holds affiliations with the UBC Institute for Gender, Race, Sexuality, and Social Justice, and the Posthumanism Research Institute at Brock University.
Dr. Ruitenberg earned her PhD at Simon Fraser University and has held roles such as Academic Director of UBC Vantage College (2017-2019) and President of the Canadian Philosophy of Education Society (2016-2019). Her research explores agonistic democracy, ethical hospitality (drawing on Derrida), and permaculture responses to climate change.
Her scholarly outputs include over 37 journal articles and 7 books addressing topics like civic education, medical ethics, and qualitative research methodologies. Recent work emphasizes the intersection of education and climate crises through permaculture frameworks.
