Claudia Nischwitz serves as an Assistant Professor and Extension Plant Pathology Specialist at Utah State University within the Biology Department. Her academic journey includes postdoctoral positions at the University of Arizona (2008-2010) and University of Georgia (2005-2008) before securing her current faculty position in 2010.
Dr. Nischwitz earned her PhD in Natural Resources from the University of Idaho (2005), MS in Plant Pathology from The University of Arizona (2001), and Diplom-Agraringenieur in Horticulture from Fachhochschule Osnabrueck, Germany (1998). Her educational background has provided a strong foundation for her work in plant disease management across diverse agricultural systems.
Her research program focuses on biological, cultural and chemical control of plant pathogens, disease management strategies, and the biology, etiology and epidemiology of fungal, bacterial, nematode and viral pathogens. She has developed expertise in diagnostic tool development and phylogenetic analyses to determine geographic origins of emerging pathogens, with applications spanning turfgrass, vegetable crops, fruit production, and ornamental horticulture.
Analysis of her publication record reveals consistent contributions to understanding plant pathogen ecology and management, with particular emphasis on nematode identification in turf systems, virus epidemiology in vegetable crops, and antibiotic resistance mechanisms in bacterial pathogens. Her work bridges fundamental research with practical extension applications for Utah's agricultural community.

Dr. Nischwitz teaches BIOL 1050/1060 (Biology Professions) and PSC 4320 (Forage Production and Pasture Management), and has mentored graduate student Jacqueline Lauritzen (2015-2018). Her extension portfolio includes Turfgrass Education (2001-2035), Master Gardener programs (2011-2025), and Plant Disease Management (2010-2025), demonstrating her commitment to translating research into practical applications for growers and industry professionals.
