Claudia Moatti serves as Adjunct Professor of Classics and Law at the University of Southern California's Gould School of Law and Professor in the Department of History at the University of Paris 8. She also directs the Mediterranean Center at the University of Paris 8, reflecting her transnational academic engagement.
Her academic foundation includes a PhD in History and HDR (Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches) in History from the University of Paris-Sorbonne, establishing her expertise in classical antiquity and legal frameworks.
Moatti's research centers on Roman political structures, imperial administration, human migration patterns in antiquity, and evolving legal concepts like libertas. Her current book projects—including Respublica Politique et cosmopolitique I, L’Empire romain en mouvement, and Libertas as a legal category in the Roman World—examine governance, mobility, and juridical identity within cosmopolitan Roman contexts, bridging historical analysis with legal theory.
She actively contributes to scholarly discourse through memberships in the Association Internationale d’Epigraphie Grecque et Latine, British Epigraphy Society, and the Steering Committee of the Center of Law, History and Culture, while presenting research internationally across Europe and North America.
Though specific advising details remain unlisted, her leadership of the Mediterranean Center and collaborative projects like the 2010 course 'Slavery and Law in Ancient and Modern Times' with Prof. Ariela Gross demonstrate her commitment to interdisciplinary academic mentorship and institutional initiatives.
