Prof. Claudia Kulmus is an Assistant Professor of Adult Education at the University of Hamburg's Faculty of Education, within the Department of Vocational Education and Lifelong Learning. She holds a PhD from Humboldt University Berlin (2013–2018) and previously worked as a PostDoc and researcher there. Her work focuses on adult education in later life, including aging societies, literacy practices among older adults, and intergenerational learning. She advises UNESCO’s Aging Societies program and contributes to journals like Hessische Blätter für Erwachsenenbildung and International Journal of Lifelong Education.
Her research explores how education shapes identity and social roles in aging, addressing topics like pandemic adaptations in senior education, literacy among migrant women, and policy frameworks for lifelong learning. She leads projects funded by institutions including the Hamburg State Research Foundation and the University of Hamburg’s Transfer Fund. Teaching includes modules on adult education didactics, program development, and empirical research methods.
Key projects include analyzing literacy practices among marginalized older migrants and studying low-literacy groups across German regions. She collaborates internationally, hosting scholars from China and Peru, and engages in public outreach via podcasts and conferences on aging and education.
