Claudia Kraft is a Professor of Contemporary History at the University of Vienna since 2018. She previously held professorships at the University of Siegen (2011-2018) and the University of Erfurt (2005-2011). She leads the Research Platform for the Study of Transformations and Eastern Europe, directs the Research Center for the History of Transformations (RECET), and participates in the Gender: Ambivalent In_Visibilities (GAIN) platform and the History of Human Rights and Democracy research group. Her work focuses on comparative European history with emphasis on Central and Eastern Europe, gender history, and state socialist societies.
Research Interests:
- 20th-century comparative European history
- Central and Eastern European history from the 18th century onward
- Gender history and feminist historiography
- State socialist societies post-WWII
- Transnational legal history
- Historical theory and area studies methodologies
Current projects include a German-Polish research initiative on agency in state socialism and studies on cultural diplomacy. She co-edits journals like L'Homme and serves on the Austrian Science Fund's Board of Trustees. Teaching includes courses on gender history, contemporary European studies, and historical methods.
