Claudia Bieling is a Professor of Social Transformation and Agriculture at the University of Hohenheim's Institute of Social Sciences in Agriculture. She heads the Department of Social Transformation and Agriculture and focuses on transdisciplinary sustainability research examining ecological and social dimensions of land use and food systems. Key areas of expertise include cultural landscapes, socio-ecological resilience, and participatory methods.
Her academic journey includes a habilitation in Landscape Management (2014) and a PhD in Forestry and Environmental Policy (1999-2002) from the University of Freiburg, alongside a forestry diploma from the University of Göttingen (1995-1999).
Research interests span sustainability transitions in agri-food systems, social-ecological systems analysis, and landscape stewardship. She edits GAIA - Ecological Perspectives for Science and Society and serves on committees including the Baden-Württemberg Biodiversity Program and Austrian Academy of Sciences' Earth System Sciences Advisory Board.
Publications emphasize collaborative projects in Central Europe, with edited volumes like Resilience and the Cultural Landscape (2012) and The Science and Practice of Landscape Stewardship (2017). Her work integrates qualitative social sciences with transdisciplinary approaches to address global challenges in agriculture and biodiversity.
