Dr. Clare Rollie is a Lecturer in Learning, Teaching, and Scholarship at the University of Glasgow’s School of Molecular Biosciences. She is also a dedicated STEM Ambassador focused on widening participation and schools outreach.
Her educational background includes a PhD and postdoctoral research at the University of St Andrews under Professor Malcolm White, where she studied protein structure and function in the CRISPR immune system of the archaeon Sulfolobus solfataricus. Prior to her current role, she worked as a Research Fellow at the University of Exeter with Professor Edze Westra, investigating bacterial-phage interactions in Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
Clare’s research spans molecular biosciences and educational scholarship. Her laboratory work has centered on protein structure and function, CRISPR immune systems, mobile genetic elements, and bacteria–bacteriophage interactions. Currently, she focuses on enhancing bioinformatics education for undergraduates, integrating active learning strategies, and improving reflective practice in life sciences. She collaborates with the School of Veterinary Medicine on projects analyzing unusual veterinary infections and with the Glasgow School of Art to develop biopigments for textile dyeing.
She coordinates the Level 1 Current Directions in Life Sciences course, serves as deputy coordinator for the Level 2 Fundamental Topics in Biology course, and contributes to Levels 3 and 4 of the Molecular & Cellular Biology degree programme. Her teaching emphasizes research-led content and student engagement, alongside initiatives like the MVLS Undergraduate Skills Award, which formalizes recognition of extracurricular student activities.
