Clare Maxwell is an Associate Professor of English for Academic Purposes at the University of Leeds, affiliated with the Language Centre and currently seconded to the School of Design. She joined the university in 2011 and has led key English language support programs, including the International Foundation Year Academic Study Skills module and summer pre-sessional courses for postgraduate students in Business, Management, Arts, and Humanities.
Her educational background includes a BA in Italian with English from the University of Leeds, a PG Cert in English for Academic Purposes from the University of Leicester, a Cambridge CELTA, and a Professional Certificate of Management from the Chartered Institute of Marketing.
Clare's research focuses on English for Academic Purposes in the Creative Arts, particularly academic writing in Design. She is currently investigating hybrid assessment genres in design education, aiming to understand how students navigate complex, interdisciplinary forms of academic expression. Her work bridges language pedagogy and disciplinary practice, with strong implications for curriculum design in art and design higher education.
Her professional expertise extends to textbook development, having written and contributed to EFL coursebooks published by Oxford University Press, Cambridge University Press, and Pearson Education, widely used in Italian secondary schools.

Clare leads the insessional EAP provision for taught postgraduate students in the School of Design, where she is responsible for the design and delivery of discipline-specific language support. She has also led the Social Science and Arts Summer Pre-sessional program. Her work emphasizes tailored academic language development across disciplines, particularly in creative and arts-based fields.
She is actively involved in research and innovation through the Language Centre and contributes to pedagogical development in academic literacies across the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Cultures.
