Clare Lees

Professor Clare Lees serves as Vice Dean of the School of Advanced Study and Director of the Institute of English Studies at the University of London. Previously, she was Professor of Medieval Literature and History of the Language at King's College London for nearly two decades.
Her research spans early medieval literatures, languages and cultures of Britain and Ireland, gender and sexuality studies, and histories of place and belief, with a focus on modern engagements with medieval cultures. She advocates for creative and critical interdisciplinary approaches within English Studies.

Clare has supervised over 20 PhD students and mentored early-career researchers in medieval literature and culture, many of whom have pursued academic careers. She actively contributes to national and international academic communities, including roles in the AHRC Peer Review College and REF2014/REF2021 subpanels.
