Clare Carlisle

Clare Carlisle is Professor of Philosophy at King's College London, specializing in Spinoza, Kierkegaard, and philosophies of religion and habit. She served as President of the British Society for Philosophy of Religion and delivered the 2024 Gifford Lectures at University of St Andrews.

Research connects philosophical and literary traditions, examining concepts of spiritual practice, human flourishing, and life-writing as philosophical method. Current work explores Spinoza's Ethics, Kierkegaard's existentialism, George Eliot's philosophical thought, and the role of habit in moral life. Recent books include philosophical biographies of Kierkegaard and Eliot.

Her publications demonstrate sustained engagement with philosophical theology, ethics, and historical reception. Recent works explore Spinoza's concept of religion, Kierkegaard's existential questions, and George Eliot's ethical vision.

Teaching covers history of modern philosophy, philosophy of religion, and ethics. Public engagement includes contributions to The Guardian, TLS, and BBC Radio 4 programs such as 'In Our Time' and 'The Moral Maze'.
