Claire Wardle is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication at Cornell University’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS). Her research focuses on information ecosystems, misinformation, and improving institutional communication to enhance societal resilience. She emphasizes collaboration with community organizations to address local information needs and has pioneered work on verifying user-generated content and mitigating misinformation impacts.
Her current outreach project involves partnering with 10 NPR stations and Cortico (an MIT-based AI initiative) to evaluate tools that bridge ideological divides ahead of elections. Wardle advocates for designing visually appealing, accessible communication materials, criticizing the overreliance on text-heavy, confusing formats.
She highlights the critical role of communication in societal challenges, such as climate change and public health (e.g., vaccine rollout failures). Her alignment with Cornell’s 'Accelerating Holistic Climate Solutions' moonshot underscores her belief that effective communication is essential to combat climate disinformation.
Outside academia, Wardle enjoys hiking with her cockapoo Dougal, hosting dinner parties, and appreciates Ithaca’s natural beauty, particularly during the golden hour at the lake.
