Helen Nissenbaum is a Professor of Information Science at Cornell Tech, Cornell University. Specializing in ethical dimensions of technology, her work bridges philosophy, policy, and computing. She holds a PhD from Stanford University and a B.A. from the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa.
Her research focuses on privacy, accountability, and equity in technology design, with notable contributions to privacy-enhancing tools like TrackMeNot and AdNauseam. Supported by grants from NSF, AFOSR, and DHHS-ONC, her work addresses societal implications of data science and digital media.
Recipient of the 2014 Barwise Prize, Nissenbaum’s interdisciplinary approach integrates law, ethics, and technical systems to advance responsible innovation. Key research areas include critical data studies, human-robot interaction, and technology policy.
