Claire Steves is a Professor of Ageing and Health at King’s College London and Clinical Director of TwinsUK, leading the Centre for Ageing Resilience in a Changing Environment (CARICE). She is also a Consultant Geriatrician at Guy's and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. Her research focuses on understanding the biological and environmental factors influencing ageing variability, particularly in mental and physical health intersections. Key areas include microbiome impacts on conditions like frailty, cognitive decline, and multi-morbidity, as well as longitudinal epidemiological studies like the Wellcome-funded cohort linking health data with socio-environmental records.
During the pandemic, she co-designed the ZOE COVID Study app, tracking over 4 million participants, and leads the UK Core Study on pandemic health impacts. Her work spans over 100 high-impact publications and integrates clinical practice with population-level research, addressing long-COVID mechanisms and health equity issues. Collaborations include the CONVALESCENCE study on post-COVID effects and the UK Longitudinal Linkage Collaboration for data-driven insights.
She oversees the TwinsUK registry, a cornerstone of genetic epidemiology studies, and explores interventions like metformin for sarcopenia. Her research emphasizes translational approaches to improve resilience in ageing populations facing climate and health challenges.
