Charles Wolfe is a Professor of Public Health at King's College London, with roles as Head of the Division of Health and Social Care Research and Director of Research and Development at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust. He trained in Medicine at the Royal Free Hospital and completed an MD at St Thomas' Hospital. His research focuses on stroke epidemiology, health services research, and chronic disease registers, including the South London Stroke Register (SLSR) established in 1988.
Educational Background: Doctor of Medicine (St Thomas' Hospital Medical School, 1985); Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust, 1978).
Research Interests: Epidemiology of stroke, post-stroke outcomes, women's health (gynaecological cancer, maternal morbidity), and implementation of evidence-based stroke interventions. He coordinated EU-funded programs assessing stroke care quality across Europe and leads projects on stroke prevention and care equity.
Recent articles highlight advancements in stroke burden analysis, personalized medicine, and the impact of socioeconomic factors on stroke outcomes. His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health and well-being (SDG 3).
Awards: NIHR Senior Investigator (2008), Best Paper Award at ICHI 2024. He chairs national and international committees, including the Stroke Association R&D committee and the Health Services Research Network Board.
Grants and Projects: Active and completed projects include integrating frailty into stroke care, equitable patient involvement in stroke research, and investigating cerebral small vessel disease in African-Caribbean populations. He supervises research teams and collaborates globally on stroke registries and policy initiatives.
Labs/Teams: Leads the Stroke Research Group at King's College London and oversees the SLSR, a cornerstone of his longitudinal studies on stroke epidemiology and care pathways.
