Professor Claire Monks is a Professor of Developmental Psychology and Deputy Head of the Institute for Lifecourse Development (ILD) at the University of Greenwich. She also serves as Centre Lead for the Centre for Vulnerable Children, Young People and Families within ILD. Her academic journey includes roles such as Interim Director of Research and Enterprise (2019), Reader in Developmental Psychology (2014–2019), and Programme Leader for MPhil/PhD Psychology (2010–2017). She has supervised 10 doctoral students to completion.
Professor Monks holds a PhD, MSc, BSc(Hons), and PGCert. Her research focuses on developmental psychology, particularly aggressive behavior in children and adolescents, bullying dynamics, cyberbullying, and prevention strategies. She collaborates internationally, publishing with researchers in Europe, Asia, and South America. Key interests include peer relationships, child abuse prevention, and educational interventions.
Her recent work emphasizes systemic approaches to bullying, such as analyzing teachers’ responses to identity-based bullying and the emotional impacts of cyberbullying. She has contributed to large-scale studies on child maltreatment prevalence and safeguarding procedures. Notable collaborations include evaluations of the NSPCC’s Speak Out Stay Safe programme and development of abuse prevention programs for young children.
Professor Monks’ publications span bullying prevention, peer victimization, and cross-cultural studies of aggression. She advocates for integrating friendship education into pastoral curricula and emphasizes early intervention in violence prevention. Her work bridges academic research with practical applications in schools and healthcare systems.
