Claire Margerison is a Professor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at Michigan State University (MSU), Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. She holds a B.A. in Biology from Tufts University, an M.P.H. in Epidemiology from UC Berkeley, and a Ph.D. in Epidemiology from UC Berkeley. After a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Texas at Austin, she joined MSU in 2013. Her research focuses on racial/ethnic and socioeconomic inequities in women’s health, particularly during pregnancy and postpartum periods. Key areas include policy impacts (e.g., ACA, Child Tax Credit) on preconception and maternal health, and maternal mortality/morbidity due to drug use, self-harm, and violence.
Her work is funded by NIH grants R01HD095951 and R01HD102319. Current team members include doctoral student Tim Michling and PhD candidate Xueshi Wang (Economics). Former team members include Kelsey Abner and Bria Campbell. The Margerison Research Group emphasizes policy-driven research to address systemic inequities in reproductive health.
Key findings include pandemic-era shifts in preterm birth rates, racial disparities in maternal mortality, and the role of socioeconomic factors in pregnancy outcomes. Her studies often integrate longitudinal data and policy analysis to propose actionable interventions.
