Claire Kelly is an environmental social scientist holding dual appointments at the University of Plymouth as Lecturer in Quality Management and Research at the Peninsula Medical School and Senior Research Fellow at the School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences (SoGEES). She leads and participates in national and international research and evaluation projects focused on the intersection of society, environment, and economy.
Dr. Kelly earned her Doctorate in Geography, Earth and Environmental Studies from the University of Plymouth in 2009, with a thesis titled "Partnerships in the development and management of marine nature-based tourism: an analysis of effectiveness." She also holds a Master's degree (2002) from the same institution on marine mammal disturbance, and a Bachelor of Science (Hons) from the Open University.

Her research focuses on understanding and evaluating relationships between society, environment, and economy using interdisciplinary co-design and participatory research methods. Dr. Kelly's work spans soil erosion prevention, land degradation, community resilience, and water quality assessment, with fieldwork conducted in diverse locations including East Africa, Peru, and Italy. She specializes in developing community-led approaches to environmental challenges, particularly through citizen science initiatives like SoilSCAN.
Dr. Kelly serves on several external bodies, including as a Member of the Soils for Europe (SOLO) Prevention of Soil Erosion Think Tank, Evaluator for the Environmental Protection Agency (Ireland) Research Programme, and Adjunct Faculty Member at Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology in Tanzania. She also serves as Trustee for Beaford Arts and Member of the Beaford Archive Steering Group.

As an educator, Dr. Kelly co-supervises PhD and Masters students and serves as a PhD external examiner, including for York University. She is an active member of the Faculty of Health Research Ethics and Integrity Committee at the University of Plymouth. Her research portfolio demonstrates a strong commitment to addressing UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those related to environmental sustainability, clean water, and climate action. Dr. Kelly's collaborative approach bridges academic research with community practice, creating tangible impacts in regions facing environmental challenges.
