Dr. Thomas Murphy is a Lecturer in Environmental Sciences at the School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences, University of Plymouth. He focuses on Nature-based Solutions (NbS) to address environmental challenges, combining soil science, plant ecology, and ecophysiology. His work emphasizes UK native woodland restoration, particularly Atlantic oak woodlands, and urban green infrastructure like living walls.
His research interests include:
- Plant-soil interactions for NbS
- Temperate rainforest restoration
- Natural flood management strategies
- Climate change adaptation
- Transdisciplinary collaboration
Recent research outputs explore oak woodland establishment in upland areas, thermal performance of green infrastructure, and temperate rainforest conservation. His work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to climate action and life on land.
As an educator, he teaches modules on Environmental Science and supervises MSc/PhD students, including projects on Atlantic oak woodlands and Temperate Rainforest expansion. He is a Trustee at Moor Trees, contributing to citizen science initiatives and Dartmoor conservation efforts.
