Claire Demoulin is a Lecturer at Yale University, affiliated with the Film Studies Department and German Department. She is a Ph.D. candidate in Film Studies at Paris 8 Vincennes Saint-Denis University (France), under Professors Christian Delage and Suzanne Liandrat-Guigues. As a 2018 Fulbright grantee, she conducts research at Yale under Professors Brigitte Peucker and Kirk Wetters.
Her research focuses on German-born director William Dieterle’s biographical films (1931–1942), exploring transnational cultural exchanges between 19th-century European heritage and 1930s Hollywood practices. She argues Dieterle’s biopics challenge linear historical narratives, emphasizing conflicts and resistance to orthodoxy in 19th-century contexts. Her work bridges European intellectual legacies and American filmmaking.
Publications include analyses of Dieterle’s Pasteur and Juarez, and a study on political biopics’ rhetorical strategies. Her research highlights transnational perspectives in cinema and the evolution of the biopic genre.
