Cindy Arvidson is a Professor in the Department of Microbiology, Genetics, & Immunology at Michigan State University (MSU), with affiliations to the Genetics & Genome Sciences Program and Cell & Molecular Biology Program. She holds a B.A. in Biology (1983, University of La Verne) and a Ph.D. in Microbiology and Molecular Genetics (1990, UCLA), followed by postdoctoral studies at Oregon Health Science University.
Her research focuses on understanding how Neisseria gonorrhoeae adapts to new host environments, particularly in the female urogenital tract. Key projects include bacterial response to host epithelial cells and interactions with vaginal microbiota, especially lactobacilli’s role in inhibiting infections. Her lab uses tissue culture models and genomic tools to identify genes critical for pathogen survival and colonization.
Recent publications span medical education innovations (e.g., shared discovery curriculum development) to bacterial pathogenesis mechanisms. Notable collaborations involve characterizing lactobacillus-derived inhibitors of gonococcal adherence. Her work bridges basic science and translational research, aiming to develop new diagnostic/therapeutic strategies for STIs.
Dr. Arvidson advises students in microbiology and molecular biology disciplines. Her research has been supported by grants focusing on host-pathogen interactions and probiotic mechanisms. She maintains an active laboratory in the MSU BioMolecular Science Gateway and collaborates with clinical partners to advance translational medicine.
