Scientia Professor Chun Hui Wang leads the School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) and directs the ARC Research Hub for Connected Sensors for Health. His career includes roles at the Defence Science and Technology Organisation (1995–2009) and RMIT University’s Sir Lawrence Wackett Aerospace Research Centre (2009–2016). Professor Wang earned his Bachelor’s degree from Huazhong University of Science and Technology (1985) and a Ph.D. from the University of Sheffield (1991).
His research focuses on advanced composites, structural health monitoring, and cryogenic materials. He has pioneered lightweight composite vessels for liquid hydrogen storage and developed soft sensors for health and energy applications. Notable innovations include the Wang-Brown model in fatigue design software and time-reversal imaging algorithms for structural diagnostics.
Key awards include the Scientia Professor title (2022), FTSE Fellow (2018), and multiple recognitions from RMIT and DSTO. He chairs editorial boards for journals like Composites Science and Technology and collaborates with industry leaders such as Lockheed Martin to commercialize composites and sensors.
Current grants include the ARC Connected Sensors Hub (2022–2027) and projects on hybrid toughening and machine learning in additive manufacturing. He mentors nine PhD students in areas like multi-modality sensors and energy storage composites. His lab facilities include Australia’s first national laser-based non-destructive evaluation system established in 2018.
