Chuen-Fung Wong is a Professor of Ethnomusicology in the Department of Music at Macalester College, specializing in Asian musical traditions with particular expertise in Uyghur and Chinese music.
His research examines minority nationalism, musical modernity, cultural revival, and exoticism across Asian contexts. Wong's scholarly output includes seminal books such as "Even in the Rain: Uyghur Music in Modern China" (2023), "Silk and Bamboo: Instrumental Music from the Chinese South" (2024), "Soundscapes in Chinese Music" (2019), and "Listening to Chinese Music" (2009), which explore intersections of music, identity, and political dynamics.
Wong earned his PhD in Ethnomusicology from the University of California, Los Angeles, complemented by an MPhil and BA from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He previously served as president of the Association for Chinese Music Research and editor of the ACMR Newsletter.
