Prof. Chu Jou-Juo is a Professor in the Department of Labor Relations at National Chung-cheng University, Taiwan. She specializes in labor relations and sociological studies focusing on Taiwanese firms in mainland China. Her research explores labor disputes, corporate social responsibility, and social dynamics in cross-strait business contexts. She obtained her Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Oxford in 1992 and has held leadership roles in academia, including heading her department since 2004. Her work critically examines labor conditions in global supply chains, particularly through case studies of Foxconn and other major enterprises.
Key research themes include the sociological implications of labor migration, identity politics among Taiwanese professionals in China, and the theoretical analysis of worker protests and collective behavior. Her studies often bridge micro-level labor practices with macro-level socio-political systems, contributing to debates on corporate governance and labor rights in transitional economies.
Prof. Chu’s articles analyze crises in labor management, such as the Foxconn suicides and strikes in Chinese plants, using frameworks like collective behavior theory and critical sociology. These studies highlight systemic issues in global manufacturing and the human costs of industrialization. Her interdisciplinary approach integrates sociology, political science, and business ethics to address contemporary labor challenges.
