Chrystal S. Johnson serves as Associate Professor of Social Studies Education in the College of Education at Purdue University. She has held significant leadership roles including Past President of African American Educators for Social Studies and the Indiana Council for the Social Studies. Johnson currently serves as Secretary/Treasurer of the Charters and School Choice AERA SIG and previously served as Program Chair and Treasurer for the College and University Assembly of the National Council for the Social Studies.
Professor Johnson's research focuses on race, culturally consonant pedagogy, character development, civic education, and schools of choice. Her scholarly work examines Black youth civic engagement perspectives in the era of Black Lives Matter, differences in NAEP civics results between charter schools, private schools, and traditional public schools, and issues concerning identity and motivation in character and citizenship development. She collaborates with Dr. Jennifer Sdunzik and Dr. Akua Akuffo on multiple manuscripts addressing school choice decisions among traditionally marginalized populations.
Johnson's publication record reveals a strong focus on educational equity, particularly regarding charter schools and civic education outcomes. Her recent work demonstrates increasing attention to the intersection of race, civic identity, and school choice, with numerous comparative studies examining how different school types affect Black youth civic achievement. The trend in her research shows a progression from theoretical frameworks on culturally consonant character education toward more empirical investigations of school choice impacts on marginalized student populations.
Professor Johnson teaches social studies methods courses in both elementary and secondary programs (EDCI 36100 and EDCI 43300) as well as theories and trends in curriculum and instruction in the online master's program. Her teaching directly connects to her research interests, emphasizing culturally responsive approaches to social studies education and civic development.
