E. Patrick Johnson is the Carlos Montezuma Professor of African American Studies and Performance Studies at Northwestern University, where he also chairs the Department of African American Studies. His interdisciplinary work bridges academia, performance, and activism, focusing on race, gender, and sexuality. Johnson earned his PhD from Louisiana State University and is recognized for groundbreaking contributions to Black queer studies, including his award-winning book Sweet Tea: Black Gay Men of the South and its theatrical adaptation, performed over 100 times. He launched the Black Arts Initiative at Northwestern in 2012 to foster interdisciplinary collaboration.
Johnson’s research integrates oral history and performance, exploring Black Southern LGBTQ+ lives and queer theory. His notable performances include Sweet Tea and Strange Fruit, which address identity politics and social justice. Awards include the Stonewall Book Award and induction into the Chicago LGBT Hall of Fame. He is a community advocate, organizing fundraisers for causes like Pediatric AIDS Chicago and supporting organizations such as Lambda Legal.
Johnson’s scholarly contributions span books, articles, and edited volumes, with a focus on Black queer studies, performance ethnography, and intersectional identities. His teaching and mentorship have influenced countless students, many of whom continue his legacy in academia, arts, and activism.
