Chryl Laird is an Associate Professor of Government and Politics at the University of Maryland College Park. She previously held positions at Saint Louis University and Bowdoin College. Laird holds a PhD and MA in Political Science from The Ohio State University, and BAs in African American Studies and Government & Politics from the University of Maryland College Park. She is an alumna of the Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program and the Ralph Bunche Summer Institute.
Her research focuses on race and ethnic politics, political psychology, and political behavior. Central themes include black political discourse’s influence on opinion formation, racial group norms, and the intersectional dynamics of race and gender for Black women’s political engagement. Her acclaimed co-authored book Steadfast Democrats examines black Democratic party loyalty through social networks and norms.
Laird teaches courses like Women of Color in Politics and Seminar in American Politics: Black Politics, emphasizing marginalized perspectives. Her work bridges academic scholarship with public discourse, advocating for accessible research addressing marginalized communities.
Her recent scholarship explores topics such as post-racial rhetoric’s electoral impacts, Confederate monument removal debates, and targeted campaign advertising effects on Black engagement. Her research consistently engages intersectional frameworks to analyze systemic inequalities in American politics.
