Aliki Christou is a Research Fellow at the Institute of Tropical Medicine Antwerp, specializing in Reproductive and Maternal Health. She holds a PhD in Public Health from the University of Sydney, an MPH from Curtin University, and a BSc in Microbiology and Pathology from the University of Western Australia. Her work focuses on improving maternal and neonatal health outcomes, particularly in low-resource and conflict-affected settings like Afghanistan, Cambodia, and Benin.
Her research emphasizes strengthening health systems to prevent stillbirths and reduce maternal/neonatal mortality. She collaborates with global organizations including the World Health Organization, Jhpiego, and local institutions such as CERRHUD (Benin) and the National Maternal and Child Health Centre (Cambodia).
Key research themes include stillbirth data collection challenges, healthcare provider practices, and community engagement strategies. She has conducted studies in Afghanistan on cultural perceptions of stillbirth, Ghana on underreported caesarean sections, and Ethiopia on gender-based violence needs.
