Aliki Christou is a post-doctoral research fellow in the Sexual and Reproductive Health unit at the Institute of Tropical Medicine Antwerp (ITM), Belgium. Her primary focus is on maternal, perinatal, and newborn health, particularly preventing stillbirths and strengthening health systems in low-resource and fragile settings. She holds a PhD in Public Health from the University of Sydney, an MSc in International Health from Curtin University, and a BSc in Microbiology/Pathology from the University of Western Australia.
Current affiliations include partnerships with CERRHUD (Benin), Cambodia’s National Maternal and Child Health Centre, and the World Health Organization in Afghanistan. She also holds an honorary post-doctoral position at the University of Sydney. Her work combines quantitative and qualitative methods to improve data collection on stillbirths and newborn deaths, with projects funded by Flanders and Flemish Government grants.
Research interests span stillbirth determinants, health systems strengthening, and global public health. Key projects include 'PrevStillbirths' (2021–2024) examining perinatal data gaps in high-burden settings and a 2020–2021 initiative documenting stillbirths in Cambodia. She has contributed to 25+ peer-reviewed articles on topics like stillbirth prevention, maternal health equity, and health data challenges in LMICs.
