معرفی
Professor Christos Papaneophytou is a full-time Professor at the University of Nicosia (UNIC), holding the additional administrative roles of Associate Dean and Program Coordinator within the School of Life and Health Sciences, Department of Life Sciences.
Education:
- PhD in Biochemistry, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, 2008
- MSc in Biochemistry, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, 2004
- BSc in Chemical Engineering, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, 2000
Research Interests
Prof. Papaneophytou leads an interdisciplinary program that bridges chemical biology, structural biochemistry, and translational medicine. His laboratory focuses on three major pillars:
- Targeted drug discovery – design and optimization of small-molecule inhibitors against kinases and cytokines implicated in cancer and autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis.
- Biomarker development – integration of multi-omics data to identify microRNA and protein signatures enabling early diagnosis of osteoarthritis.
- Natural antimicrobials – mining plant-derived polyphenols and other secondary metabolites to combat multidrug-resistant pathogens and reduce antibiotic dependence.
Publication Trends
Between 2022 and 2025, his 15 most recent articles reveal a strategic shift toward translational applications: roughly half investigate novel anti-inflammatory or antiviral agents, while the remainder deploy cutting-edge biophysical and gene-editing tools to dissect metabolic reprogramming in cancer and neuroinflammation. A growing subset explores educational innovation, reflecting his commitment to evidence-based pedagogy in the AI era.
Scientific Awards & Recognitions
- Principal Investigator, H2020 OACTIVE project on osteoarthritis biomarkers
- Greek State Scholarships Foundation (IKY) fellowship for doctoral studies
- Editorial Board member, Archives of Industrial Biotechnology
- Reviewer for Microbial Cell Factories, Combinatorial Chemistry & High Throughput Screening, Biochemical Engineering Journal, and Cellular and Molecular Life Sciences
Supervision & Funding
Prof. Papaneophytou has extensive experience mentoring undergraduate, master’s, and PhD students. He has successfully secured competitive grants from both international (EU H2020) and national funding bodies, currently directing the multi-institutional OACTIVE consortium aimed at personalised osteoarthritis risk prediction.
Laboratory & Teams
He heads an active research group within the University of Nicosia’s Department of Life Sciences, equipped with state-of-the-art facilities for protein biochemistry, cell culture, small-animal pharmacogenetic studies, and high-throughput screening. The team collaborates closely with the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics and multiple European partners to accelerate bench-to-bedside translation.
