Christopher S. Moore is a Professor of Astrophysical and Planetary Sciences at the University of Colorado Boulder, affiliated with the Center for Astrophysics and Space Astronomy (CASA) and the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP). His research focuses on solar atmospheres, magnetic cycles, and the development of advanced space instrumentation, including CubeSat missions like MinXSS. He leads investigations into coronal heating mechanisms, solar flare dynamics, and the energy budget of eruptive events. Moore has pioneered innovations in UV coatings for space telescopes and contributed to the design of multi-wavelength observatories such as SSAXI-Rocket and ECCCO.
- Awarded the IAU PhD Prize (2017) and AAS Rodger Doxsey Travel Prize (2018)
- Principal Investigator for MinXSS CubeSat missions and co-author of over 50 peer-reviewed articles
- Co-developed the Marshall Grazing Incidence X-ray Spectrometer and Wolter-I X-ray optics
His work integrates observational data from satellites (e.g., RHESSI, Hinode) with numerical simulations to address fundamental questions in solar physics. Moore has advised multiple undergraduate researchers and mentored teams in NASA-funded projects, emphasizing STEM diversity through initiatives like the Black Student Alliance and NASA Student Ambassador programs.
