Christopher Penfield is an Associate Professor of Philosophy at Sweet Briar College, where he has been since 2017. He is dedicated to the humanities as central to liberal arts education and believes in their role in social transformation. His primary specialization is postwar French philosophy, focusing on political, social, and ethical agency within modern European thought and critical theory (including philosophy of race, feminist philosophy, and queer theory). Penfield is also a translator of French philosophical works and co-editor of Between Foucault and Derrida (2016).
Penfield holds a B.A. in Philosophy from Haverford College, an M.A. in Philosophy from The New School for Social Research, and a Ph.D. in Philosophy from Purdue University. His research bridges Enlightenment critiques, biopolitics, and contemporary social theory, supported by grants like the NEH-funded translation of Gilles Deleuze’s Foucault seminars (2019). He has contributed peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and reviews in venues such as Foucault Studies and Notre Dame Philosophical Reviews.
Penfield’s teaching spans ethics, philosophy of art, critical social theory, environmental philosophy, and logic. He emphasizes the liberal arts’ power to foster collective flourishing and advocates for curricular innovation through grants like the CIC-supported philosophy program development. His work integrates philosophical analysis with interdisciplinary themes like tyranny, friendship, and postmodern ethics.
