Christopher Northrop is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Maine Fort Kent (UMFK), serving as Supervising Professor in the Rural Practice Clinic. Previously, he held roles at Maine Law, including founding the Juvenile Justice Clinic (2006) and transitioning it into the Youth Justice Clinic (2022). In September 2024, he retired from full-time duties and was granted Emeritus status. His expertise spans juvenile law, rural legal practice, and criminal defense advocacy.
Northrop has been instrumental in advancing youth defense through his work with the Gault Center, serving as a certified trainer for the Youth Defender Advocacy Program (YDAP) since 2013. He has consulted on defender systems in twelve U.S. states and teaches YDAP protocols nationwide. His career includes decades of private practice focused on youth defense.
Recognized nationally, he received the Robert E. Shepherd Jr. Leadership Award (2018) and the Unsung Hero Award (2017) for his dedication to indigent defendants. His current focus includes rural legal practice and mentoring through UMFK.
