Christopher Michel, Associate Professor of Voice at Sam Houston State University, is a renowned pedagogue and performer celebrated for his transformative teaching and international artistic leadership. Based in the School of Music, his studio is recognized as one of the most successful in the region, with over 40 students advancing to finalist rounds at the TEXOMA Regional NATS Competition in the past decade.
He actively contributes to the global vocal community through roles at institutions like the Accademia Vocale Lorenzo Malfatti in Lucca, Italy, and as faculty at the Houston Grand Opera High School Voice Studio. His performance career spans leading operatic roles (Figaro, Count Almaviva) and major concert works (Mozart’s Requiem, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony), culminating in a solo tour of Italy with the Cypress Creek Chorale that included an audience with Pope Francis.
Michel’s leadership roles include presidency of the Greater Houston Chapter of NATS and chairing the National Opera Association’s Dominick Argento Vocal Competition. He previously served as Director of Opera Theatre at the University of Alabama, securing a significant grant from the Alabama Council on the Arts.
