Dr. Christopher Massey is a Principal Lecturer (Learning & Teaching) at Teesside University, working within the Department of History. He has been affiliated with the university since 2015 and is part of the Institute for Collective Place Leadership. His roles include Course Leader for the Master of Public Administration (MPA) and module leader for courses such as 'Contemporary Issues in Public Administration, Politics and Policy' and 'History in Depth.'
Education
He earned a PhD in History from Teesside University (2008–2012), a Master's in History with Distinction (2007–2008), and a first-class honours Bachelor's in History (2004–2007).
Research Interests
His research focuses on modern British history, Labour Party policies (especially nationalisation and modernisation), political leadership, and local/national governance. He has published works on the Labour Party’s expulsion of figures like Alfred Edwards and the Militant Tendency, and his current research emphasizes the history of nationalisation within the Labour Party.
Grants & Projects
He co-led the ERASMUS+ funded 'Generation Brexit' project (2020–2022) and the 2024 'Powering our Future' initiative with Stockton Borough Council. He advises doctoral candidates on topics like Labour Party decline in Tees Valley, railway history, and green growth policy.
External Roles
Since 2011, he has served as an elected councillor in Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council, including roles as Deputy Leader (2017–2019) and Cabinet Member (2012–2019, 2023–present). He currently chairs Teesside International Airport and sits on the Teesside Pension Fund Board. Previously, he was a Board Member of the North York Moors National Park Authority (2013–2023).
Labs & Teams
He co-founded the Teesside University Public Policy Academy (2022), which connects students with policymakers and civil service placements. This initiative includes collaborations with the UK Civil Service at the Darlington Economic Campus.
