Christopher M. Yip is a Professor and Dean of the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering at the University of Toronto. He holds a B.A.Sc. from the University of Toronto, a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota, and is a licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.).
His educational background includes:
- B.A.Sc. (University of Toronto)
- Ph.D. (University of Minnesota)
- Professional Engineer designation
Professor Yip's research focuses on single molecule biophysics, particularly in understanding molecular assembly mechanisms into supramolecular architectures ranging from small molecules through peptides to proteins. His transdisciplinary team of engineers, chemists, physicists, biologists, and life scientists investigates structural, chemical, and physical interactions at molecular length scales with implications for biology, nanotechnology, and engineering. His work spans protein-membrane interactions, molecular dynamics in live cells, and nanoscale properties of soft materials.
His recent publications reveal a strong emphasis on advanced imaging techniques, especially single-molecule localization microscopy and super-resolution imaging, applied across diverse biological systems including cardiac hypertrophy, cystic fibrosis, neurodegenerative diseases, and bacterial pathogenesis. His research demonstrates cross-disciplinary integration of biophysics, cell biology, molecular biology, and engineering principles.
Scientific awards and honors:
- Fellow, Engineering Institute of Canada (2013)
- Fellow, American Association for the Advancement of Science (2009)
- Graduate Faculty Teaching Award, University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine (2008)
- Tier 2 Canada Research Chair (2000-2010)
- Faculty Teaching Award (2000/01)
- Premier's Research Excellence Award (1999)
- Molecular Imaging Corp. Young Biological Scanning Probe Microscopist of the Year (1998)
As Principal Investigator of the Yip Research Lab at Donnelly CCBR (160 College Street, Room 404), he leads development of novel integrated combinatorial imaging platforms combining super-resolution optical, light sheet, and localization microscopies with scanning probe and nano-IR techniques. His team creates custom software and hardware strategies to optimize these platforms for real-time studies of molecular and cellular dynamics, developmental processes, and biomolecular interactions at interfaces.
