Christopher Looby is a Professor in the Department of English at the University of California, Los Angeles. He specializes in American Literature from the 18th to 19th centuries, with a focus on Sexuality Studies, print culture, and historical approaches to literary analysis.
- Ph.D. in English and Comparative Literature from Columbia University (1989)
- M.A. and B.A. in Literature and History from Washington University (1981, 1979)
His research explores intersections between literary texts and historical contexts, emphasizing material print forms and the evolution of sexuality. Current projects include studies of serial narrative fiction in the long nineteenth century and the 'literariness' of sexuality in American literature.
Recent publications analyze queer orthography, marmorean unconscious, and seriality in 19th-century American fiction. His editorial work includes the Q19: The Queer American Nineteenth Century series at the University of Pennsylvania Press.
Scientific awards and grants include fellowships from the Library Company of Philadelphia, the Newberry Library, and UCLA Faculty Senate Council on Research. He has co-edited works with Professor Michael North and directed the English in Florence summer program.
