Prof. Christopher K. Ober is the Francis Norwood Bard Professor of Metallurgical Engineering at Cornell University's Department of Materials Science and Engineering. He leads the Cornell Nanoscale Facility (CNF) and specializes in lithography, polymer self-organization, and nanotechnology. His research bridges materials science with biotechnology and sustainable engineering. Ober has received prestigious awards including the National Academy of Engineering membership (2023), SPIE Senior Member status (2018), and the Photopolymer Science & Technology Award (2015). He holds leadership roles, including former Interim Dean of Engineering (2009–2010), and collaborates globally with top institutions. His work focuses on environmentally friendly materials, advanced lithographic techniques, and polymer innovation.
Education: B.Sc. Chemistry (University of Waterloo, 1978); M.S. and Ph.D. in Polymer Science & Engineering (University of Massachusetts-Amherst, 1980–1982).
Research Themes: Polymer brushes, photolithography, self-assembly, and nanobiotechnology. His lab explores nanoscale patterning, fouling-resistant surfaces, and EUV resist materials. Collaborations span microelectronics, biomedical engineering, and energy sectors.
Awards: Extensive recognition in materials science, including AAAS and APS fellowships (2014–2015) and a Humboldt Research Prize (2007).
Grants & Projects: Funded by ONR, NSF, Intel, and DTRA for initiatives like EUV resist development and eco-friendly surface coatings.
