Christopher J. Kobus serves as Associate Professor in Mechanical Engineering and Director of Outreach, Recruitment and Retention at Oakland University's School of Engineering and Computer Science. He also directs Engineering and Energy Education at the OU INC Clean Energy Research Center (CERC) and holds a CETL Faculty Fellowship. Joining Oakland University in 1998 after earning his Ph.D. there, he maintains active roles in academic leadership and research.
Education:
- Ph.D., Oakland University, 1998
His research centers on energy sustainability through thermal engineering and fluid mechanics, specifically investigating two-phase flow instabilities, combined convection systems, and boundary layer phenomena. Dr. Kobus develops analytical and experimental methodologies for fluid-thermal systems while emphasizing practical applications in energy efficiency that balance environmental impact with living standards. His work directly addresses humanity's sustainability challenges through engineering innovation.
Recent publications demonstrate dual expertise in thermal measurement techniques (2013) and engineering education frameworks (2017), particularly in alternative energy teacher training. His research bridges theoretical heat transfer with practical clean energy applications, while educational work focuses on RET program development for K-12 educators.
Awards:
- SECS Faculty Teaching Award (2014)
- Dr. Wilbert J. McKeachie International Poster Prize (2013)
As Director of the Research Experience for Teachers program, he leads federally funded initiatives in alternative energy and automotive engineering education. His CETL fellowship supports pedagogical innovation, while CERC leadership drives clean energy research collaborations. He maintains active membership in ASME, ASEE, and Tau Beta Pi, contributing to both academic and professional engineering communities.
Associated with the Clean Energy Research Center (CERC) and Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL), his work integrates laboratory research with educational outreach through structured programs connecting university resources with K-12 institutions and industry partners.
