Christopher J. Fries is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology and Criminology at the Faculty of Arts, University of Manitoba. A social and behavioral health scientist, his work bridges sociology with health studies, focusing on the intersections of social location, culture, embodiment, and health outcomes.

His research explores salutogenesis, health lifestyles, medical pluralism, and the social determinants of health, with a particular emphasis on resistance to medicalization and the sociocultural dimensions of complementary/alternative medicine. He co-authored the leading Canadian health sociology textbook Pursuing Health and Wellness (Oxford University Press, 2017), adopted by over 20 institutions.
Recent publications investigate refugee settlement through the lens of salutogenic theory, medicalization of aging and cancer, and integrative medicine's impact on healthcare systems. These works span disciplines like Public Health, Social Theory, and Gerontology, reflecting his interdisciplinary approach.
