Christopher Hyde

Professor Christopher Hyde is a leading academic at the University of Exeter's College of Health and Community Sciences, where he directs the Exeter Test Group and has been instrumental in health technology assessment since joining in 2009. His work bridges clinical medicine, public health, and policy-making, with significant contributions to national health decision processes through roles on the National Screening Committee and NICE's Diagnostic Advisory Committee.

Hyde's research interests focus on systematic reviews, health economic modelling, health technology assessment, and test evaluation. His career trajectory spans clinical medicine (qualifying in 1986), public health specialization (completed 1996), and increasingly sophisticated research methodologies. He established the ARIF unit at Birmingham University (1996-2012) and directed the West Midlands Health Technology Assessment Collaboration (WMHTAC) from 2007. His work consistently addresses the gap between test development and practical patient benefit, with projects including the UNITED project on genetically determined diabetes and school entry hearing screening with Prof Fortnum's audiology group.
