Christopher A. Nelson

Christopher A. Nelson is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pathology & Immunology at Washington University School of Medicine. His research focuses on poxvirus immune evasion proteins, particularly those utilizing the conserved "PIE scaffold" β-sandwich domain.

Education:

• BS in Chemical Engineering from University of Wisconsin-Madison (1985)
• PhD in Immunology & Molecular Biology from Washington University (1994)
• Postdoctoral training in Pathology & Immunology at Washington University (1994-1998)

Research: He studies the functional diversity of PIE domain-containing proteins in chordopoxviruses, employing X-ray crystallography to elucidate their molecular interactions with immune ligands. His work spans structural biology, viral immunology, and protein engineering.
