Christoph Schüth is a Full Professor for Hydrogeology at the Institute for Applied Geosciences within the Department of Materials and Geosciences at Technical University Darmstadt, a position he has held since 2005. He concurrently serves as Scientific Director of the IWW Water Centre (since 2010) and leads the MARSOL research project (5.2 million euros, since 2014). From 2008 to 2025, he served as Vice-Dean of the Department of Materials and Geosciences.
His academic foundation includes a Diploma in Geology from the University of Marburg (1987) and a PhD in Applied Geology from the University of Tübingen (1994), followed by postdoctoral research at Stanford University (1995-1997) and the University of Tübingen (1997-2003), culminating in his Habilitation in 2004.
Schüth's research centers on critical water resource challenges with emphases on:
- Groundwater flow dynamics and contaminant transport mechanisms
- Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) systems and water reuse technologies
- Environmental tracer applications for aquifer characterization
- Climate change impacts on hydrological cycles
- Water quality degradation in coastal and agricultural regions
- Remediation techniques for industrial pollutants
His publication portfolio demonstrates methodological diversity, integrating field measurements, numerical modeling, remote sensing, and isotope hydrology to address water scarcity in Mediterranean, South Asian, and Central Asian contexts. Recent work increasingly focuses on interdisciplinary solutions for sustainable water management under anthropogenic and climatic stressors.
Schüth directs major initiatives including the MARSOL project (Mediterranean MAR) and the IWW Water Centre, securing substantial European and national funding. His leadership spans academic administration (Vice-Dean role) and operational research direction, with emphasis on translating scientific findings into practical water management strategies.
He maintains active collaboration with the Hydrogeology research group at TU Darmstadt, which conducts both fundamental investigations of subsurface processes and applied projects addressing global water security challenges through international partnerships.
