Christoph M Steger is an Associate Professor of Animation and Fine Arts at California College of the Arts (CCA) in San Francisco. His work bridges animation, documentary, and experimental film, focusing on the interplay between reality and media representation. He holds a BA from Hochschule RheinMain (Wiesbaden, Germany) and an MA from the Royal College of Art (London).
His research explores digital materiality, biometrics, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Notable projects include Jeffery and the Dinosaurs (2007), a mixed-media documentary on outsider artist Jeffery Marzi, and Senseless Arabesques (2024), examining facial animation and power structures through 3D mapping. Recent collaborations with Red Culebra and Guillermo Galindo combine live animation, music, and dance into immersive performances.
Exhibitions include the International Documentary Festival Amsterdam, Ottawa International Animation Festival, and Tate Modern. Steger has contributed to BBC, Channel Four, and Amnesty International projects. His practice interrogates technology’s role in shaping cultural narratives and collective memory, often addressing postcolonial and ecological themes.
