Research Interests
Dr. Lanzen’s scholarship integrates Medical Humanities with Narrative Medicine, drawing on Black literature and philosophy, continental philosophy, and communication theory (especially Paul Watzlawick). He explores how narratives of illness and care cultivate superordinate competencies—such as empathy, ethical reasoning, and advanced communication skills—in medical students. His empirical work at IMPP aims to design assessment tools that validly measure these competencies within high-stakes practical medical examinations.
Publications & Scholarly Impact
His 2018 monograph Physicians of Culture examines healing catharsis in Toni Morrison’s fiction through the lens of Nietzschean philosophy, exemplifying his interdisciplinary approach. Ongoing projects translate insights from literary and communication studies into innovative educational practices for future physicians.
