Professor Christoph Kleinschnitz is the Director of the Clinic for Neurology at the University Hospital Essen, part of the University of Duisburg-Essen’s Medical Faculty. His clinical and research leadership spans stroke, multiple sclerosis, neuroimmunology, and neuro-oncology. He directs a department recognized nationally and internationally for excellence in neurological care, holding certifications from the German Stroke Society, European Stroke Organisation, and German Multiple Sclerosis Society.
His research interests focus on the intersection of immunology and neurology, particularly thrombo-inflammation, ischemia-reperfusion injury, and immune mechanisms in stroke and neurodegenerative diseases. He leads major research initiatives such as the DFG-funded FOR 2879 “ImmunoStroke” consortium, aiming to develop novel stroke therapies by understanding immune cell roles in regeneration. His work integrates clinical observation with experimental models, advancing translational neuroscience.
The analysis of his recent publications reveals a strong trend in neuroimmunology and stroke research, with significant contributions to understanding the role of coagulation factors in inflammation, astrocyte dysfunction in motor neuron disease, and the evaluation of new therapies for multiple sclerosis and spinal muscular atrophy. His work frequently employs advanced techniques including machine learning for neuroimaging and detailed molecular and cellular analyses.
- Certified MS Specialist (Multiple Sclerosis Competence Network)
- DGKN-recognized training center for neurology
- DSG and ESO-certified Stroke Unit
- Multiple awards for national leadership in MS, Stroke, and Parkinson’s care (2025)
- Director of a DIN EN ISO 9001:2015 certified clinic
As a leading academic neurologist, Prof. Kleinschnitz oversees a major clinical department, secures substantial research funding, and mentors future neurologists and researchers. His work is supported by grants from the DFG and BMBF, including the FERROPath consortium targeting ischemia-reperfusion injury. His department functions as a hub for interdisciplinary neurological care, housing specialized centers for epilepsy, myasthenia, neuro-oncology, and neuromuscular diseases, ensuring a comprehensive, research-driven approach to patient treatment.
