Roberto Bomprezzi, MD, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Neurology at the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School, Associate Clinical Director of the Neuroimmunology & Multiple-Sclerosis Center, and a fellowship-trained neuro-immunologist who has been on the UMass faculty since 2014. He previously served as faculty at Barrow Neurological Institute (2008-2012) and as an attending neurologist at Maine General Neurology (2012-2014).
Education:
- MD, Sapienza University of Rome, Rome, Italy
- PhD, Experimental Neurobiology, Sapienza University of Rome
- Neurology residency, St Joseph’s Hospital, Phoenix, Arizona
- Neuro-immunology fellowship, Barrow Neurological Institute, Phoenix, Arizona
Research & Clinical Focus:
Dr. Bomprezzi leads clinical and translational projects that optimize immune-modulating therapy for neuro-inflammatory disorders, develop imaging biomarkers of chronic inflammation, and conduct phase-II/III trials of new MS agents. His work integrates advanced MRI-PET imaging, precision dosing strategies for natalizumab, and collaborative consensus efforts for rare conditions such as neurosarcoidosis.
Publication Trends:
Across 50+ peer-reviewed papers since 1999 his scholarly output maps the evolution of MS therapeutics—from early genome-wide expression and twin studies, through the introduction of natalizumab and dimethyl fumarate, to present-day Bruton-tyrosine-kinase inhibition and PET-based microglial imaging. Recurrent themes are individualized therapy, extended-interval dosing, safety surveillance, and biomarker-guided treatment.
Teaching & Mentoring:
He maintains >15 years of continuous education activity, instructing medical students, residents, fellows, and post-docs, and serves as an international invited speaker on neuro-immunological topics.
Clinical Trials Leadership:
He is principal or co-investigator on multiple active trials at UMass Memorial, contributes to consensus guideline panels, and directs the Neuroimmunology Fellowship program that trains the next generation of subspecialists.
