Christoph Böttcher

Dr. Christoph Böttcher serves as a Private Lecturer (Privatdozent) at Free University of Berlin's Research Center for Electron Microscopy, where he leads structural biology research using advanced cryo-electron microscopy. His work bridges virology, nanotechnology, and supramolecular chemistry to resolve complex biomolecular architectures.

His research focuses on:

• Three-dimensional structural analysis of viral membrane fusion glycoproteins
• Design of multicompartment micelles and switchable liposomes from engineered amphiphiles
• Stabilization techniques for amyloidogenic peptides using fluorinated dendron probes
• Interface engineering with fluorine-specific interactions for nanomaterial applications

Dr. Böttcher has secured critical infrastructure including a 300 kV cryo-EM microscope and managed seven DFG-funded projects since 2000. Current work continues through the Collaborative Research Center on fluorine interfaces, advancing structural characterization of hybrid biomaterial systems.

His laboratory provides university-wide access to high-end electron microscopy facilities, supporting interdisciplinary projects from viral receptor studies to metal nanoparticle-dye aggregate growth mechanisms. This infrastructure enables cutting-edge work in structural virology and nanoscale biomaterial design.
