Andreas Herrmann

Professor Andreas Herrmann is a faculty member at Freie Universität Berlin's Department of Biology, Chemistry, Pharmacy, specifically affiliated with the Institute of Chemistry and Biochemistry. His research spans membrane biochemistry, virology, and structural biology with particular focus on membrane dynamics and viral entry mechanisms.

His primary research interests include:

• Transverse phospholipid distribution in cellular and acrosome membranes
• 3D structure determination of membrane fusion-active glycoproteins using cryo-electron microscopy
• Molecular mechanisms of aminophospholipid translocases
• Aggregation and membrane association of amyloidogenic proteins
• Viral entry mechanisms, particularly for Equine Arteritis Virus and Influenza virus

Professor Herrmann has led numerous DFG-funded research projects and has been actively involved in graduate education through multiple graduate colleges and research training groups. His methodological approach combines advanced imaging techniques including cryo-electron microscopy, confocal fluorescence microscopy, and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy with biochemical and biophysical analyses.
