Christine Kumlien is a Professor and Vice Dean at the Department of Care Science within the Faculty of Health and Society at Malmö University. She is also affiliated with the department of vascular diseases at Skane University hospital. As a registered nurse (RN) and nurse specialist in vascular surgery care, her academic career bridges clinical practice and research in nursing science.
Professor Kumlien's research focuses primarily on nursing care and vascular diseases. She has a special interest in the development and psychometric testing of instruments measuring vascular treatment outcomes. Her work also explores secondary prevention strategies and the psychosocial consequences of participation in screening programs. A significant aspect of her research involves geriatric care, particularly through her involvement with the PROSENIOR research program, which aims to improve nursing quality for older people in municipal care with specific focus on preventing falls, pressure ulcers, malnutrition, and poor oral health. Additionally, she is engaged in interprofessional learning research through the RIDHE platform, working to identify central research questions regarding interprofessional education in healthcare.
Her recent publications reveal a strong emphasis on patient-centered care across multiple domains. Several studies focus on older adult populations, examining issues like loneliness, chronic pain management, and preventive care strategies. Other work addresses vascular care outcomes, patient experiences with medical procedures like colonoscopy, and the development of health-promoting interventions for chronic conditions such as diabetes. This diverse yet cohesive body of work demonstrates her commitment to improving healthcare through rigorous research that addresses both clinical outcomes and patient experiences.
Professor Kumlien is actively involved in several research environments including the Biofilms Research Centre for Biointerfaces, the Skin and Wound Care research platform, and the Research Informed Development of Higher Education (RIDHE) platform. She leads or contributes to multiple ongoing research projects such as "From Measurement to Coproduction: Advancing Patient-Reported Experience in Colonoscopy Care," "Co-designing an intervention to prevent fall, malnutrition, poor oral health and pressure ulcers," and the PROSENIOR initiative focused on elderly care quality improvement.
