Dr. Christina Welch is a Reader in Religious Studies and Death Studies at the University of Winchester, affiliated with the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. She holds a first-class BA in Religious Studies with Psychology (2000) and an MA in Archaeology of Art & Representation (2001), both from King Alfred’s College and the University of Southampton, respectively. Her AHRB-funded doctorate (2005) explored the intersection of Native American spirituality and Western alternative spiritual identities.
Her research focuses on death studies, medieval mortality, and Caribbean colonial histories. Notable projects include the AHRC/NERC-funded 'Unearthing the Hidden Histories of Indigenous Caribbean Contributions to Western Botanical Knowledge' (shortlisted for THE Awards 2023), and the interdisciplinary Medieval Jewish Winchester project. She is a leading authority on late medieval carved cadaver sculptures, with a dedicated website documenting these artifacts.
Dr. Welch has secured over £114,507 in grants, including funding for projects like the St. Vincent Botanical Garden research and Sensing Place Heritage. She holds prestigious fellowships: Royal Historical Society (2023) and Higher Education Academy (2015). Her publications span peer-reviewed journals, edited volumes, and public engagement works, addressing topics like Garifuna heritage, medieval cadaver tombs, and death rituals.
She supervises PhD candidates in areas including death studies, gender and religion, and indigenous spiritualities. Her work integrates archaeology, history, and anthropology, with a focus on decolonizing narratives and community heritage projects.
